A disturbing idea: the venereal gonorrhea, colloquially called gonorrhea, can apparently be transmitted not only through sex, but also by kissing. To this finding, Australian researchers in a new study, they published in the journal "Sexually Transmitted Infections".
Case Report NEJM_16.55Gonorrhoea is one of the most commonly transmitted sexually transmitted diseases worldwide. Every year, the World Health Organization (WHO) counts 78 million cases, and the number is rising. In Europe alone, 5 million people are affected by the infectious disease each year. And that, although since 2001 no more official registration obligation exists – the dark number remains unknown. Only in Saxony there is a duty to register. Here, the number of infections has more than doubled within eight years, reports the "mirror".
An infection can lead to blood poisoning and infertility
The causative agent of the disease is a bacterium that affects the mucous membranes of the urinary tract, explains the "mopo". After the infection, it then takes a few days until the first symptoms appear, usually a purulent discharge from the urethra. Especially young adults aged 15-25 are affected by the disease, explains the STI Society, which provides information on sexually transmitted diseases. Most men are affected, but also in women gonorrhea can affect the urinary tract.
Even if gonorrhea is not normally fatal, infection can lead to blood poisoning and infertility. The danger of becoming infected with HIV is also increased, adds the "mirror". Until now, condoms were only recommended for protection purposes. But whether this protection is sufficient in the future is questionable.
Who Tripper 11.15It has been suggested that gonorrhea is mainly transmitted during sex, whether genital or oral. However, this assumption puts the new study into question. Because the scientists point out that tongue kisses can also be a possible way of transmission.
Gonorrhea in the throat area
In their research, researchers focused on oropharyngeal gonorrhea, a form that affects only the mucous membranes of the pharynx. This form of infection initially runs mostly symptom-free, is often passed on so ignorant.
In a health center in Melbourne, the researchers then conducted a survey of homosexual and bisexual men. Subjects should give details of their past sexual partners and practices: kissing without sex, kissing with sex and sex without kissing.
Increased risk with changing kiss partners
First case of Horror Tripper 21.10 Of the nearly 4,000 participants, six percent suffered from gonorrhea in the throat area. The analysis showed that the risk of contracting with this form of gonorrhea is significantly higher for men kissing. For subjects with more than four kiss partners, compared to those with only one, the risk of infection increased by 46 percent. For participants who combined tongue kisses with sexual intercourse, the risk even increased by 81 percent.
In their findings, however, the scientists also emphasized that they are only observations. Whether really only kissing is the cause of increased transmission rate of gonorrhea remains unclear. However, the findings suggest that the risk of infection for oropharyngeal gonorrhea is underestimated and kissing, with or without sex, creates an increased risk, writes the "Spiegel". How to protect yourself while kissing, but remains controversial. The researchers themselves propose antibacterial mouthwashes in addition to condoms – but whether that is a solution is an open question.
